Time

Animated on Procreate

Sound Design on Premiere Pro

“On the Clock” Composed by Richard Lu

My project was based around the human relationship with time and the depressive monotony of everyday life. Being primarily a video creator, I wanted to experiment with 2D animation, something I’ve never done, using Procreate.

I maintained a very minimal colour palette, mainly black and white, in order to express the bleakness of this world. I also subverted the traditional relationship between colours and emotions by making green go from happiness and very nature-oriented to be related to the repetitive and draining office working experience.

Sonically, I experimented with instruments, creating my own drum beat loop and bass line loop. A majority of my sound editing was done in premier pro, however the creation of the instrumentals were done in BandLab and GarageBand. Throughout the sequence, I used a running water and rain motif that persisted the entire time. The running water is symbolic of passing time, and its inevitability. The rain first begins as a literal response to the rain in the scene, however it continues even after the rain stops, the rain then turns into a metaphor for the characters own gloom. All the other elements, the streetlight sounds, the typing, the writing, were made to be percussive and rhythmic to emulate the ticking of a clock and the passing of time.
